Fireplace Tiles
Original Victorian fireplace tiles are now over 100 years old, and have stood the test of time. Some are in better conditions than others but they still hold their value well.
Victorian tiles were as elaborate as they could be at first showing mostly floral arrangements. Slowly, other designs surfaced such as single coloured tiles, symmetrical designs with flowers in the centre, and even sets of a large 5 tile image.
Towards the later part of the Victorian period and the early Edwardian period, fireplace tiles got even more exciting with elegant Art Nouveau and art deco designs, which were hand painted and also tube line (raised), with some very vivid colours. Tiles were the Victorian / Edwardian ‘TV ‘ of the day – rich colours and elegant interior designs so you were drawn into them especially when the fire was lit.
Today both original and reproduced tiles are used with antique fireplace inserts. There is no definite rule for which tiles go with which period fireplace, for example it is very common to see an Art Nouveau fireplace with plain Edwardian tiles or vice versa or a Victorian fireplace with Art Nouveau tiles. The choice is very much down to you and so almost anything goes.
