Timber Surrounds/Mantels
Timber fireplace surrounds and mantels are usually created from natural oak and pine, or are covered with a wood veneer / paint effect. Our traditional wood fire surrounds feature natural variations in knot formation making each solid wood fireplace unique. Solid oak surrounds and solid pine fireplace surrounds are usually supplied with a waxed finish. The veneer and painted surrounds provide a uniform appearance for contemporary rooms, but are unsuitable for use with solid fuel fires.

We also have a wide range of period cast iron fire surrounds available as an alternative choice.

Victorian Era Design

Following the relative simplicity of the Regency period, Victorian fireplace design was characterised by an eclectic and unrestrained approach, incorporating elements of both classicism and naturalistic detail. The proportions of the fireplace reflected the architecture of the period as it became lower in height than its predecessors to suit the modest ceiling heights found in many 19th century buildings.

Victorian fireplaces generally had mantel shelves of generous depth to accommodate the decorative imperative of the period to display as much ornament as possible.

A new freedom in the use of architectural form and ornamentation emerged in the Victorian age which is reflected in the fireplace designs of the period.
