Cast Iron Fireplace SurroundsCast Iron Fireplace surrounds are often considered highly elegant due to their impressive proportions and wealth of detailed embellishment. They can add grace and refinement to any large room.
They were first introduced in the eighteenth century. Generally they were a decorative item for the main reception rooms of the property like the lounge, dinning room, and what was known as the parlour or morning room. This would be the outer fireplace with an inner fire known as the insert tiled or arched where the fire would be lit.
We have a wide range of period cast iron fire surrounds available, so if you wish to see any cast iron surround displayed with any insert, please do not hesitate to get in touch - Pictures are for illustration purposes and can be changed ie tiles, insert, arches etc.
Victorian Era DesignFollowing the relative simplicity of the Regency period, Victorian fireplace design was characterised by an eclectic and unrestrained approach, incorporating elements of both classicism and naturalistic detail. The proportions of the fireplace reflected the architecture of the period as it became lower in height than its predecessors to suit the modest ceiling heights found in many 19th century buildings.
Victorian fireplaces generally had mantel shelves of generous depth to accommodate the decorative imperative of the period to display as much ornament as possible.
A new freedom in the use of architectural form and ornamentation emerged in the Victorian age which is reflected in the fireplace designs of the period.
